Dude, we *so* just won that argument in Philosophy. ^_^
...we've got our real teacher now, and actually, he's not quite as cool, as good at getting us into discussions as the other dude was. He's alright, tho.
So yeah. We've been discussing these Six Intuitions about Reality, that various ancient Greeks settled on, right?
1) Everything, at bottom, is made from the same kind of stuff.
2) There are a lot of individual things in the world, seperated by many different distances.
3) There is a lot of variety in the world.
4) There is a lot of change in the world.
5) Although there is change, there seems to be something permanent underlying, governing, and causing this change.
6) Things made of the same stuff have the same origin.
Last class, we debated and discussed all of these to a good extent, tried to determine if they were true or not. (This is where we learnt that scientists now believe that the smallest element of anything - smaller'n atoms, smaller'n quarks - are these strings. The universe is made of string. o_Ó )
Today, we learnt about paradoxes.
(He gave us a couple of examples... one was "This statement is a lie." ...feels like ZooTV, ne? ^_^ ..blows my mind...*g*)
..and we were going thru, going over the various paradoxes within the Six Inferences. ...between 1, 2, and 6...1 and 3...and then he tried to tell us there was one between 4 and 5.
There's a lot of change in the world, and there is something permanent that underlies, governs, and causes this change.
This seems to be a paradox, since it should perhaps imply that there can't be something permanent like that, since there's all this change.
But then he kept going back to saying that what it is, is that something can't cause change without being a part of it. An outside factor has to change - has to stop being permanent - in order to cause change.
But we're like, no... One girl who was sitting by me (don't know her name) said well, what if you have say, a scary statue. When people come by and look at it, it causes them to be frightened. But the statue doesn't change, it's permanent. Yet, it's caused a change in the people.
And our teacher stood there silent for a minute, thinking. "Well, it makes things difficult when you bring people into it..."
Hehe. We got him.
...then I drew on C.S Lewis (like I've a hunch I'm gonna end up doing a *lot* in there - 'specially when we get to the existance of God bit...*g*), and said that something can't *govern* something if it's a part of that. This other thing that governs change *can't* be change, so it *must* be permanent in order to govern change.
..and he's all like, "well, I shouldn't have put govern in there..." ...one guy's like, but you did, you wrote it.
He went into this whole example, you've a curved channel, and you put a ball into it. The channel is permanent, and governs the change, governs the way the ball will move, but doesn't *make* the ball move, doesn't *cause* the change. Brit-boy (whose name is Guy - yay for taking attendence *laugh*) pointed out that the change is made by something else permanent - gravity. And I said well, the channel *does* cause the change, in a way. While it doesn't cause the ball to move, it *does* cause the ball to take a certain direction, it causes the ball to move in that squiggly line.
..all this stuff...dude, we *so* stumped him. He's all like, well, I'll have to give this some thought, I'll let you guys go for today...(was already the end of class! went by *so* fast today..*g*).
We win.
