So, I've finally figured it out, the difference between the "choir people" - the chosen ones, the elite, whatever you choose to call them, that small group of..well..divas, I s'pose, they're talented and all and always have some witty remark, always something interesting to say or do or be, and sometimes some are nice enough but..just, not easy people to be comfortable around? And the people I've been hanging around with this year, Daf and Laur and Sham and Steve and everybody..not entirely "upper-crust" peeps, in my school..and yet..they're very cool, we all get along very well, they've got well-founded opinions on everything, and while they're not the type who, say, would usually get a solo in a choir concert (which is nearly as much politics as talent here), they love music. So yeah, what it all comes down to is, they're a television sitcom, an' we're a rock band. :) ...or maybe they're a soap opera somedays, I don't know, and maybe we've got a few punk rockers with us too, but.. They're the beautiful people, the talented, the witty, the dramatic. They're the "dedicated followers of fashion", the herd, the conformers...we're the outcasts. We're...individuals, some of us dress weird, we say what we feel, we're emotional but it's all *real*, we love music and try to see the world for what it is, instead of make it fit to what we want (in the sense that they maybe don't see what they don't want to see...I'm not saying we don't want to try and change the world, cos we do, that's what rock is all about!) Their world...I dunno, maybe it works for them, but I know it wouldn't for me. "We celebrate donut culture, it's sweet and it tastes good but there's a void at the heart?" (The Ground Beneath Her Feet, Salman Rushdie), that's how it looks to me...celebrity culture, it's all pretty and all, while we're down in the grit and the dirt, soaking up everything we can... we're not afraid to take a few fashion risks, we're not afraid to speak our minds, or defend our favourite bands (no matter how much people may laugh). We want to change the world, while they want to play in it. We want to breathe life, live it, exude it, take it for all its worth, make something out of it...
Maybe I'm hitting on them too harshly, maybe there is something there, maybe I'm generalizing too hard... but if it is there in them, it's not where we can see it..and honesty really is one of the things we all need most, a complete honesty, cos you can't help correct someone's false knowledge or impression if you don't know it's there, or you can't..you just can't *know* a person if they don't say who they are, and, in a way, "to know him is to love him", if you get to know someone well enough, oftentimes you'll find you *do* have something in common..
..but I'm wandering again. (I *so* love this nice lil blog...! Cos whether anyone reads it or not, by having it, I get the feeling that it's out there, for the world to see..and think that maybe there *are* people out there who see it..)
I don't know. I'm not trying to say we're superior to them...altho I think it seems that way to me, a lot, maybe I *do* think so, to a point... ... ...no, it's not that. I think it's that I think, in terms of our treatment of others, our actions and all, we can be better than they are, I believe in our way of life, as opposed to theirs...
..or in the end, maybe it's just that I like music a lot better than I like television. :) (..as in, the tv. Not as in the band, Television, cos they're cool..)
