my pet!

*spazzes all about*
In case it changes before anyone reads this, check this screencap of cnn.com's front page just now.

One guess as to whose fast ferry that is. *giiiiggles*
(article)

But duuuuude! they-- *sniffle*

"a midsize American city that has seen better days"
"this faded industrial city"

Now, alright, that may well be true.. but--! It sounds so sad.
And the picture on the article has a fisherman far more prominent than the damn ferry itself, we're painted as a midwestern ghost town.

"The prospect of losing such a unique attraction -- only three other high-speed car ferries operate in the United States -- elicited varying degrees of cynicism, sadness, bewilderment and yearning"
And gales of "I-told-you-so!"s and laughter at the idiocy of whoever got this thing into existance, but y'know...

But this article treats the ferry as Rochester's one last hope for revitalization, someone actually comes out and *says* this...and I *really* don't see that. Ferry = tourism. While tourism supports nice, warm, attractive locals... Rochester has some amazing historical things that we jaded natives tend to overlook (the George Eastman House, anything to do with Susan B. Anthony, countless other things that I've probably half-forgotten about.. there's a big Underground Railroad thing someplace nearby, isn't there?), some amazing buildings and neat venues and pretty views, but... It's just *not* a touristy city. There's no shopping center in the city itself (Midtown doesn't count, is *anything* left there now?)...and how far's the city from Charlotte anyway? Goodness knows Charlotte's got nothing anyway - the only reason anyone goes down there is cos our parents passed on the Abbott's tradition to all of us. And cos it's the nearest thing to a beach we have, even if it's closed all the time. Really, that carousel oughta be far bigger of a thing than it is... I forget what the deal is, it's been so long since I've been near it, but isn't it really old? or modeled after the original which was...

*googles out of curiousity*
ooooooooh... I'd forgotten about that lighthouse - not the one on the pier, that's an overgrown barber pole. *giggles* But there's one not far away, stone and things, we went there once when I was little... it's like uber-historic yo.

O_O!!!! pictures of what the beach used to look like! omg... "the Coney Island of Western New York": pics. Holy shit... it really *was* something huge down there! How the feck did they let all that slide away?!
"The only thing that remains is the 1906 carrousel and a lovely public beach." ..ehm..depends on your definition of a lovely public beach, but... well that's the carrousel anyway. ^_________^ That's insane, it's almost a hundred years old??? It's so incredibly gorgeous, you all remember how detailed and beautiful those animals are? And it still *runs*! And there's the calliope off to the side, with angels playing cymbals and things... *mega rush of nostalgia for things both from childhood and a past never seen* That's it you guys, we're going down there during the day sometime during the summer, when the thing's actually open.
And I'm delveing into this whole long-gone beach front...I've always been curious about it, even back when my parents were younger it was really nice down there, there was apparently a kick-ass miniature golf course that my dad's always on about...
(edit: gogogo! omg so many postcards - and info! nearly every time I search for something, I find a new and awesome area on this site, I *adore*. <3 <3 <3)

What on earth happened to Rochester? ..Kodak can be blamed for the last five, ten years, but not much beyond that... such a huge, important, politically and otherwise intellectually active city, so many things invented and prominent people living in it... we developed XEROX, yo, have you any idea how much that changed the world?? Xerox and *FILM*! for cameras - we'd still be dragging around glass and silver plates were it not for good ol' George. <3

Two more letters added to my novel..
..and guess who's nearly a thousand words behind schedule already? ^^; meep.

so incredibly, fantastically, insanely doomed.

gonna be a great month yo. *g*

Meanwhile, a belated thaaaaankyouuuu! and superglomp to Megs for helping me figure out how to title the chapters (as I suppose they are). You rock. ^_^

brrr. it's damn fecking cold in here...
*re-opens weather.com prog to figure out how cold it is out*

Yeah internet-guy came by today and fixed things again, told me what to do if it happens again, and what he figured'd happened this time. And we discussed Linux and things and it was cool. *giggles* hee.

Feels like 38 out there.

...I reeeeaaally need to get those flannel sheets back on my bed. x_x brrr.

*blinks* well that was odd.
Knock at the door just now, had a momentary moment of panic that it might be the landlord... opened the door to see a random fratboy.
Who said he had kind of a weird request, but could they step inside just for a minute to videotape themselves in the house, as part of a scavenger hunt for their fraternity, since one of their brothers lived here last year.
I'm standing there, blinking, probably looking really confused. *giggles*
Meanwhile, the INSTANT she saw the door was open, Bear BOLTED outside. *facepalm*
So I'm like yeah, uh, sure, I guess... so like ten fratboys, smelling of smoke, all crowd into the living room. They were impressively polite - took off their wet shoes, complimented up and down about how incredibly nice the place looked, how totally different from last year it was (I'm like yeah, I know, it was a disaaaaster when we came in).
I hung around nearby, they got their camera going and pointed it around the living room with all of them in it, and were gone in about five minutes.
Not that that wasn't enough time to leave a slight smoky scent in the room. x_x;

Once they left, I grabbed my shoes and walked along the side of the house in the rain, calling Bear, until she poked her wet little head out from under the car. goooodnesss.

..oh, but most of you don't know *last* night's story. Or, rather, 5am this morning's story.
From a deliciously deep and much-needed sleep, I slowly (and I mean sloowly) regain consciousness, realising there's someone walking around my room in the dark, softly calling for Bear. Eventually I realise that there's a person in my room, and probably sit up or something (I really don't remember). It's Meghan, who tells me that somehow during the night, the front door opened - she was trying to see if the cat was still inside or not. After poking around my room and talking to a barely-aware me, she leaves. I lie in bed a few more minutes, as my brain slowly realises what she just said, and then vaguely considers possible courses of action.
Maybe five minutes later, I stagger out of my room, eyes only barely open in the bright light of the little room by the living room, listening and trying to sort out what's going on. By the time I got out to the living room, I learned that Bear'd been outside but hadn't gone far - when they closed and then re-opened the door, she came running up to it.
And Kitty who used to always visit us was on the porch as well! So we rejoiced over Bear and I stood outside a moment to snuggle Kitty, whom I miss lots...and I have to wonder if he was keeping an eye on lilBear? *smiles*

So after poking at the door last night and then today, we still have no fecking clue how it got open. It was windy last night, but not as windy as it's been other times. The door was closed tightly and locked. Britt and Meghan tested the door today, pushing and pulling at it, and it stays shut when it's been shut.

Current hypothesis: Bear has learned to open doors. This is entirely possible - she tends to be relentless when she wants something (like getting onto the top shelves in closets, via climbing clothes >_<;; ), and I've known cats who were able to open doorknobs. (Jumping off a nearby shelf and repeatedly scrabbling at the doorknob, trying to cling to it, until it opened.)

Other crazy Bear story: Last night, while Britty was taking a shower, the door was open a crack and Bear got into the bathroom. All of the sudden, I hear Britty SCREAM, so I ask if everything's alright - I thought maybe Bear'd just startled her or something. But I went over to stand outside the doorway, Britt yelled to come look, I peeked in...
And Bear was perched on the shower curtain rod.
A moment later she jumped back down onto the sink and scampered out of the bathroom, leaving Britt and I to blink and be utterly confounded.
This cat is completely out of her little mind.

mmmmm, ghetto tuna-noodle cassarole. *giiiiggles*
package of ramen (sans seasoning), a can of tuna, a few bits of cheddar cheese, and a handful of various seasonings (dill seed, some basil, a few other things). w007.

*whimpers and pouts* so all I needed to do was copy-paste the code for the actionscript into flash and it should have worked.
it definitely didn't.
I need to present a tutorial on something we didn't cover in class on Wednesday.

I am so fucked. as usual.

So, despite all the ridiculous amounts of drama around here, had an alright Hallowe'en.. got my costume all together, and despite insane difficulties in doing so, got to campus and went to GLBSU's Masquerade Ball with Daf'n'Jeff and had a very nice time. ^_^ First dance I'd been to since high school, really, but the music was for the most part reallyreally good, so that was exciting. *g* Not nearly as many people there as I'd thought there'd be, but apparently it was a good turn-out, so y'know, and the people there had some awesome costumes and were fun, so that was cool. The 5th Street Band, who played FredFest last year, did an acoustic set (well, the three of the..four or five of them who came, anyway), which was very cool, they were awesome and it was happy.
Left there sometime after 11, and we decided to go to Denny's for some food - which was fine by me cos I'd barely eaten a thing that day. (The day..had been a bit of a disaster, I'd had no sleep, I was cranky, it just sucked like mad and I'll not go into it now so I don't get cranky again remebering it all.) So we piled into Jeff's truck (me barely making the walk from the WilliC out to the student parking lot, the heels I got to go with my costume were like doooom for lil me) and went to Denny's. And found a whole bunch of people who'd been at the ball already there, so we sat with them and it was cool. *g*
And, in yet another bizarre coincidence (I seem to be surrounded by them lately), one of the girls there recognised me, though I hadn't recognised her - Jennifer, who was in the Lucia Fest with me back home years back! *laughs* Both of our grandmothers had told us the other was at Fredonia, but I'm not on campus as much anymore, and I didn't recognise her...and it occurs to me that she stopped going shortly after she was Lucia, which if I remember right, was a year or two before I was...and I was Lucia when I was, what, 13? 14? something like that. *laughs softly* So no wonder...
Got back home around 12.30 or so, and Megs and I stayed up delightfully late, playing with our older sets of U2s, in celebration of Hallowe'en and the Larrys' birthday. ^_____^ And ZooLar dressed as Jareth and I diiiiiiiied. mmmph. And Mackie... *smiles softly and melts* Mackie was dressed as an angel, and was so incredibly beautiful..... <3

Yesterday was officially Hallowe'en in Fredonia - due to it actually falling on a Sunday, a Christian day, they moved it to Saturday. (I also figure it's cos of school on Monday and all. Britt, of course, with her usual dramatic flair, adamently denies this, but.. y'know.) So, from 3-7pm, we had random spurts of kids coming to our door, and it was very fun. ^_____^ Britt and I had our costumes on, just for the fun of it, and unfortunately we ran out of our stash of mini-Snickers pretty quickly, and wound up giving out only crappy cheap lil hard candies, but.. *giggles, shrugs* It was still fun. Mostly younger kids - there were some that couldn't've been more than 3 or 4 and they were far too adorable and I died. <3 Had one group of kids probably about my sister's age, maybe a year or two younger...and there were like ten of them together, it was a bit crazy. *giggles* Altogether, I'd say we had something like.. 30ish? give or take a dozen, I'm dreadful at estimation. *giggles* But it was cool.
Then last night Megs and I played with our younger sets of U2s, again in celebration of the Larrys birthday and Hallowe'en. ^_^ And Megs'/my Lar dressed as Ziggy Stardust and I spaaaazzed. <3 But I think my Edgelet and Adam won - Edge dressed as a mad scientist, and wrote all over Adam, who was all in green - scrawling equations with liquid chalk all over a chalkboard. *giiggles merrily*

Today.. hasn't felt the least bit like Hallowe'en. *laughs softly, shaking head* But to all intents and purposes, yesterday and the day before did, so s'all good.

And I have caaandy cos Megs is a darling and sent me bunches. ^___________^ As well as R.E.M.'s new album. <3 <3 <3 *GLOMPS* You sototally rock, and soon's I get a box I'm sending you cookies and things. *giggles and hugs*

NaNoWriMo begins tomorrow.. I'm both bouncing about excited and full of pent-up stories I've been holding back for weeks, and scared shitless of the sheer colume I'm gonna need to deal with. *giggles* Again, the novel-blog is here, read and comment and hopefully it won't suck royally. ^^;;;

Well, tomorrow's November 1st. *g*
